The Journey depicts the Professional Development process the Ranger follows from day 1 in the job to fully established Ranger and Ranger manager. The Journey is illustrated in the diagram as the journey water makes from source (new start Ranger) to the sea (fully established ranger). The journey the Ranger makes is ‘influenced’ by a number a factors before and during the trip towards the sea and the process is cyclical representing the feedback loops of the process.

The Ranger Standards Manual

Welcome to the Rangers Standards Manual, an on-line tool that supports the Ranger Professional Development Journey.

The Manual provides guidance on the employment and professional development of rangers. It covers 2 distinct areas:

Code of Practice for employment of Rangers, outlining the Role of the Ranger, professional best practice and the skills and competencies required to do the job.
Ranger Professional Development journey that starts with induction and foundation training and works towards a Scottish Ranger Award through a programme of Continuing Professional Development Programme (CPD).

The Manual is set out in 8 sections that chart the process from recruitment through to Ranger Manager:

1. Code of Practice for the employment of Rangers. This section supports the
recruitment of rangers and is divided into 4 parts:

  • The role of the Ranger as described in the National Policy
  • Professional Best practice that all Rangers should follow
  • The skills and competencies of a Ranger. These are based on National Occupational Standards and are designed to relate to National Outcomes and the Aims of
  • Rangers as outlined in National Policy
  • Assessing your service. Not all services will require the same skills and competencies. Services should identify the skills and competencies required to deliver their Service Plan/ Strategy

2. The Ranger Professional Development journey. This section outlines the benefits the Journey will bring to Rangers and Ranger Services

3. Planning the Journey. This is the start of the process either when the Ranger starts (at Induction) or when they would like to be accredited for prior learning.

4. Getting equipped for the Journey. This relates to new start Rangers. Following induction they should attend Foundation training which provides an idea of the
journey ahead and outlines what opportunities for gaining skills and competencies there are along the way.

5. The Journey. This section provides a guide to the CPD process

6. Reaching your destination. This section covers the Ranger Award and submitting your portfolio

7. The journey continues. The journey dies not stop with the Award. Further Management competencies are outlined – leading to a ‘CPD+’ award

8. Training providers. This section provides information on courses that are relevant to the set of speacilist competencies.
