Ranger Standards Manual
Welcome to the Rangers Standards Manual, an on-line tool that provides guidance on the employment and professional development of Rangers. It covers 2 distinct areas:
1. Code of Practice for the employment of Rangers, outlining the Role of the Ranger, professional best practice and the skills and competencies required to do the job.. This section supports the recruitment of Rangers and is divided into 4 parts:
• Core roles of the Ranger as described in the National Policy
• Professional Best Practice that all Rangers should follow
• A Code of Practice for Ranger Managers including the skills and competencies of a Ranger. These are based on National Occupational Standards and are designed to relate to the National Outcomes and the Aims of Rangers as outlined in National Policy
• Assessing your service. Not all services will require the same skills and competencies. Services should identify the skills and competencies required to deliver their Service Plan/ Strategy
2. Ranger Professional Development journey that starts with induction training and works towards a Scottish Ranger Award through a programme of Continuing Professional Development Programme (CPD). The journey does not stop with the Award. It is intended that Further Management competencies will be put together in future for those who want to advance in their career.
The Ranger Standards Manual was developed by the Ranger Development Partnership
Code of Practice - Introduction to the code
The Code is intended primarily for those managing Rangers, whether as line managers, senior Rangers, site owners or agents – the Code uses the collective term Ranger managers.
Professional best practice for Rangers
Ranger managers should be seeking to cultivate an appropriate level of professionalism within their Service. Rangers should be encouraged to consider the Code as a basis for their own personal development with adaptations for individuals and circumstances. Professional best practice is articulated in much of what Rangers already do.
Core roles of a Ranger
The Rangers in Scotland statement provides the following Vision for Rangers:
‘Scotland’s Rangers connect people with places. They provide an innovative, inspirational and professional service, committed to enhancing public enjoyment, understanding and care of the outdoors, focused on maintaining the quality and relevance of their work and recognised, valued and supported by their employers, other related professions and the public’.
